Make certain that your children know every day how much they are loved, not for their grades, honors, or awards but for their striving to be independent, capable, good and loving people. We need to be certain that our emphasis is on those things that have been shown to contribute to healthy self-development: encouraging autonomy and self-management skills, valuing relationships and reciprocity, allowing space for the development of self-efficacy, and being able to truly see, truly appreciate and truly love the child who stands in front of us.
Summer Reading Update

I've been able to read a few books this summer. At some point, I decided I was going to finish all the books that I've started but haven't finished. That amounted to about 10 books. Right now I have 4 books to finish before the kids start school. I would then like to make a Fall Reading program. Perhaps I'll read a number of books on my bookshelves I haven't cracked open yet. Perhaps I'll read 2-3 books and then buy a new one I've been dying to read as a reward. Maybe I'll do a reading challenge.

Here's my updated completed list...

Shen of the Sea
by Arthur Bowie Chrisman
****

Adam of the Road
by Elizabeth Gray
***

Missing May
by Cynthia Rylant
***

Little Women
by Louisa May Alcott
*****

The Secret
****

Darcy's Story
by Janet Aylmer
***

The Overachievers
Alexandra Robbins
****

More Checked Off

I've been spending a bit of time reading and knocking some of my summer reading list off. type='text'>I failed but things are looking good

I utterly failed the Classics Challenge. I finished 1/2 of Captains Courageous, didn't crack open Anna Karenina, had previously read Age of Innocence, didn't touch Frankenstein and completely forgot what the 5th book was on my list for the Classics Challenge. Given all of that, I'm on pace to read more this year than at any other time I can remember.

Here's what I've read so far this year...

Classics Challenge

The first challenge I'm embarking on is to reduce my list of unread classics...you know...those books that you always mean to read, think you should read but haven't because of any one of a number of reasons. When I was young, I was the kid you could find at recess reading Little House on the Prarie, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Charlotte's Web. I used to read a book a day when I was younger and then I got to college and that killed my love of reading for a good 15 years (I was a history major and discovered that I could still pass the class with A's and B's without actually reading the assignments.). Only recently have I begun to enjoy reading again and finding wonderful books that we were never asked to read in school, ones that I probably wouldn't have appreciated without having a little of life's experiences under my belt. So here I go...willingly losing myself in the bookstacks of the local library and Barnes and Noble.
